Both characters are engaging and well written. I have never been so tense! A religious group of zealots called ‘The Righteous’? That is until she meets Scott a new boy to the school. She also wants to be like her sister and wants to meet with Scott every day, but she is scared of her parents. And that surprises me a bit, because if you analyse it, it’s not that special. Would you be friends with someone like Martha? Her older sister, Mary, was expelled from the family at age 16 for bad behavior, and now sends an occasional post card to Martha, which is promptly torn up by their father, and then retrieved and saved by Martha.
At the start, Martha is bullied by all the children and they all call her “Raggedy Anne” because her mother makes her clothes. Scott – Boy that befriends Martha and is very determined and caring. Due to bad copying, I was missing one chapter of the book, but it was in the middle and I got the gist of what happened.
One day he noticed her digging through her pencil pouch so he offered her his ruler. There’s more emphasis on friendship, endurance and unconditional love than on the horrible things that go on behind closed doors. Mary comes and her mother and father block the door, trying to stop Martha leaving, but she pushes through with ‘Abomination’ and escapes with Mary.

Despite having younger central characters – only twelve years of age – the novel has at its heart a message of personal development and strength and I found that even for me, sitting squat and ugly in middle age, their characters and problems were both interesting and engaging. The main characters are Martha – girl who was a righteous, shes confused, wears ugly clothing her mom gives her. It’s a story that’s now been covered a few times since this was written – a family living as part of a religious sect, and Martha and Scot An early Swindells with a shocking storyline, some admirable young characters and a lot to think about Martha is an outcast at school, in homemade uniform and different to the others in her Year 8 class.

Now, twelve is the age that is also an insult abomnation those blessed with baby faces – ‘they looked about twelve’. She also wants to be like her sister and wants to meet with Scott every day, but she is scared of her parents.

Hi, Thank you for your comment. Swindells did such a great dobert building to the end and then abruptly finished as if he had a word count limit. How has Martha developed as a character? Happy ending for a kid well, two kids who had a shit start to life.
